Temporomandibular (TMJ) Disorder Treatments in Ottawa

Regaining normal jaw movement

Jaw joints are the most used joints in your body: these joints allow you to breathe, talk, yawn and chew. The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located in front of the ear, which is why a TMJ disorder will cause facial pain, jaw pain, headaches or earaches.

Other symptoms that you will recognize:

  • Pain and pressure behind the eyes

  • Clicking or popping sound when opening or closing the mouth

  • Locked jaw

  • Jaw goes out of place

  • Tenderness of the jaw muscles

  • Face swelling

Although the cause of the problem is not clear, professionals generally attribute it to:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching

  • Tightening of facial or jaw muscles due to stress

  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the temporomandibular joints

  • Jaw or neck injury

  • Dislocation of the disc between the ball and socket of the jaw

If you've been diagnosed with TMJ, a certified physiotherapist at Ottawa Carleton Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Center can help you.
